Record number of building permits in first four months of 2021

21 juni 2021

A record 26,000 building permits were issued in the first four months of 2021. Last year, the number of building permits in the same period was 21,000. Never before have so many permits been issued in the first four months of a year.

The high number of permits issued is a result of all efforts by the government and market parties to increase construction production in the Netherlands. If this positive trend can be continued, the number of permits in 2021 could reach 78,000. That is more than the government's ambition of 75,000 permits per year. In 2020 and 2019, the total number of building permits issued was 67,000 and 58,000 respectively.

Marijn Snijders, managing director at Capital Value: 'It is good news that the number of building permits is increasing, but it is not yet enough to reduce the housing shortage. It is very important that we do everything we can to keep the new construction production going. It is worrying that many municipalities indicate that they have insufficient financial resources and capacity to realise the planned new construction. We also see building prices rising rapidly, which can jeopardize the feasibility of projects. The new Cabinet will have to do everything it can to continue to accelerate the planned development projects in the Netherlands.'
